Enviromentally Resonsible Manufacturing

At Australian Office, we are committed to an environmentally responsible approach across all our operations.

Our fundamental commitment is to go beyond regulatory compliance with a range of positive initiatives for environmental responsibility.

At our Maryvale facility

  • Recognising that manufacturing paper requires energy, Australian Paper is continuously seeking ways to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and exploring opportunities for renewable energy alternatives.
  • The Maryvale Mill is one of the largest generators of renewable energy in Victoria. (Source: Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics – Australian Electricity Generation Report 2008).
  • Australian Paper uses a variety of energy sources including natural gas, electricity and renewable energy from mill manufacturing processes.  47% of Maryvale's energy reuqirements are met from renewable sources.
  • From 2005/06 to 2006/07, we have made significant progress at the Maryvale Mill and achieved reductions in actual water usage by 2.5%. Maryvale Mill's water usage per tonne of paper produced has reduced by 66% in the last 20 years.
  • The Maryvale Mill draws its raw water requirements from a regional reservoir managed by Gippsland Water in the Latrobe Valley. Maryvale Mill’s efficient production process means that this water is re-used five times on average. 67% of it is treated and returned to the local river for environmental flow, and eventually the ocean. The Mill has a comprehensive discharge monitoring program in place to ensure that effluent does not negatively affect receiving waters, and only untreated raw water is drawn from the reservoir. The fibre used in Australian Paper’s manufacturing is sourced from responsibly managed forests, managed plantations, cardboard waste, de-inked pulp and imported pulp.

    • All waste cardboard and plastic is recycled.
    • Waste oils from machine gear boxes are recycled.
    • Waste from PVA glues is properly managed and disposed.

At our Preston facility

  • All printing uses water, alcohol, rubber and/or UV-based inks.
  • Each month, we recycle a number of materials from our operations including waste cardboard, paper and plastic (LDPE).
